Intellect

As of 2005, over 18,000 workers were employed in intelligent technology firms throughout Waterloo Region, representing over 550 firms with 10% of the Region's workforce.  3,160 of those workers are employed in intelligent technology firms located in the City of Waterloo.

It comes then as no surprise that 54,900 jobs were created in the census area since 1987, giving the area the second largest employment growth rate in the province of Ontario. In August 2005, the region had the lowest unemployment rate (6.5%) of census areas in the province of Ontario with populations greater than 100,000.

With over 50% of residents who are 15 years of age and over having pursued post-secondary education, Waterloo has become a leader in intelligent technology intellectual development and our technological leaders have a reputation for helping one another through member-driven organizations such as Communitech.

Yet so fast is intelligent technology growing that there is always the drive to recruit new talent and in 2005 Communitech and 50 area employers launched a high-profile recruitment drive to attract intelligent technology workers to the region. This initiative successfully brought industry leaders into the community to increase its capabilities even further.  In addition, Waterlootechjobs.com - Communitech's technology jobs portal - is a key site for attracting technology workers to the region.
